Collection: Clam Collection

The giant clams found in Bocas aren’t just big—they can weigh over 200 kilograms (440 lbs) and live for more than 100 years! 🐚 But the strangest part? They have tiny, symbiotic algae living in their tissues, which photosynthesize and provide up to 90% of the clam’s energy—basically, the clam is partly solar-powered.

Even weirder: giant clams can sense light and close their shells accordingly, even though they have no brain or eyes. Their “eyes” are actually tiny, light-sensitive spots on their mantle. It’s like having hundreds of mini sensors built into their skin.
